Open - Egbert

TT meet Egbert.
Below is Egbert's Open, released on Cocoon not too long ago. Now the reason why I bring your attention to it is that I believe it is a perfect tune for ice canon action at Amnesia. Makes me think that Egbert went to Ibiza last summer and whilst at Cocoon in Amnesia after been blasted by the ice canon thought, ah! (light bulb bing!) went back to his studio in Gaarmeny and came out with this banger..

Second drop + ice canon (+ballon) = HoOoOoOoO!!

I would also like to invite my friend Julian Fenner, who turned me onto this album to join our blog. I don't actually know how though. If someone wants to let me know, I'd appreciate it.

Can we also have a bit more activity on here please? :-)

Shed - The Traveller (Album)

For such a well-respected artist, Rene Pawlowitz seems extraordinarily unfussy. While other producers tool around in the studio for hours trying to find the right tones and timbres, Pawlowitz says he just gets an idea in his head, sits down and executes it. His swift approach is not lost on the final product; listening to The Traveller you don't picture him second guessing himself very much, belaboring the placement of a snare or the curve of an envelope. Each song, though very intricate, is clear, concise and unembellished, doing just what it needs to do and then ending.

Intentional or not, The Traveller is a fitting title: the album never stays in one place for long. With most records, you reach a point a few tracks in where the artist has more or less revealed his hand, making what's to come, at least stylistically, fairly clear. Pawlowitz doesn't let this happen. In fact, for the first part of the album it's like he's deliberately faking out his audience: a heavy momentum gets going early with "Keep Time," the record's clubbiest song, then abruptly drops off with "The Bot," a slow, atmospheric piece with a syncopated beat that takes four minutes to kick in. Pawlowitz keeps up this non-linear narrative for the rest of the album, skipping through tempos, moods and time signatures without much issue, until eventually arriving at "Leave Things," a 160 BPM drum & bass indulgence.

At first pass the album might not sound as rich as Shedding the Past, Pawlowitz's excellent debut album from 2008, but really it's just a bit less flashy. That long player was packed with lush imagery and emotive chords, but The Traveller has more to offer in the way of subtle detail. That said, the record is by no means cold and emotionless: the title track provides a nice dose of soothing ambiance, "No Way!" breaks things up with its carefree, slightly delirious mood and "Atmo – Action" evokes the epic melancholy of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works. Then there's "44A (Hardwax Forever!)," the unabashed ode to Berlin's most well-loved record shop, whose euphoric arpeggios betray just how important the place really is to Shed.

In the three years or so since his last album, Pawlowitz has garnered a lot of acclaim for his WAX and EQD series, through which he releases expertly crafted club tracks. Listening to The Traveller, it seems like he used these channels to get all the bangers out of his system, leaving the more exploratory work to be done as Shed. The aforementioned club tunes are great, but Pawlowitz is most innovative within the open framework of the long-player—where WAX and EQD attempt to perfect an already established formula, Shed transcends the formulas altogether, and more so on his new album than ever before. He's gone on record saying he finds most techno today boring and too structurally rigid. On The Traveller, he presents a very convincing alternative.

DISKUSSION: reflections on the dreamer..?

Well, the most-anticipated techno album of the year didn't have that much techno on it did it?
BUT: i do think the Kollektiv Turmstrasse album is excellent, all the same.
A really varied album: there’s tracks that sound like Burial but with a bit more of a game plan, a couple that remind me of an edgier-sounding Royksopp and some jazzglitches I could listen to all day...

-really interested to hear your thoughts (?) x

Aril Brikha

I was recently introduced to this Iranian/Swedish producer and have not stopped listening since.

Brikha wields Detroit daggers, slicing through with soundscapes reminiscent of  fans' fave: Hammer of Thor (Fantaaaastic). So if you liked the 'Hammer' sound, then I think you are in for a treat.

kollektiv Turmstrasse - Rebellion Der Träumer

The duos first album finally out! Rebellion Der Träumer which translates to "rebellion of the dreamers" is as KT put it "so much more than an album to us... it reflects our development over the past years... it reveals our true nature and what we really are: Traeumer"
I've only had the one listen but what I got so far is that this album is not really aimed for the dancefloor. I see what they mean by "Traeumer", as this album demonstrates a much more introspective side of KT. It moves away from the typical heavy grooves we may have gotten use to recently, especially with their awesome remixes, actually there's hardly any techno or tech house to be found at all! Nonetheless it is still full of those gorgeous trademark KT sounds, and you could still easily find yourself boogieing to a lot of it. I think that you and I will very much appreciate this wonderful work of art.

Expressions - Max Cooper

With the title “Expressions” in addition to Cooper’s characteristic formulae this four track release is, as you would expect, a collection of atmospheric/intense/ambient like techno. The three original tracks are, well I guess you can put it this way: make you feel pleasantly Enveloped by the reverberations of a steady Ripple in Max Cooper’s Sea of Sound. The release also features Chaotisch Series (Maetrik Abstract Beats remix). On the first listen I was a little confused as to why it would include this remix, it just didn’t quite fit in with the others. But then it came to me, I realised that such “atmospherically intense techno” sometimes needs a bit of ‘chaos’ in order for it to be appreciated even more. Wonderful stuff from the Cooper.

Arabianesque Nights

Well well well haven't we been busy little bees. Buzzing round a festering shit pile. Not really there have been some truly great posts of late, phew, maybe techno too much.... thank you all for your contributions.

A little while back Filip posted a track that I can only describe as TOTAL. It was criminally overlooked at the time by myself and the rest of TT, but after a recent Traktor set in Corfu by a certain DJ FILIPOS the track took on a life of it's own..... Needless to say the epic set will go down as one of the best of all time, as myself and Dan Brookes will testify. The Brookes B was even out mixed out by Filipos at one point.

ps filip - apparat remix please?

After a week of relative inactivity here at DJH HQ, it seemed fitting to create something for people to play at the many house parties and gatherings across London on the most exciting weekend of the year; Notting Hill Carnival.

This mix is also going to be used for an art installation my friend Rob Adlington is creating in Brighton called Looking Sound. When he renders the visuals I will upload the finished piece.

Pig & Dan are darkside

Dzone (Pig & Dan Remix)

Ok guys I have been listening to have been abcent for a while and sorry cos I have been busy working. So I tought I would mark my return with a dark one from Pig & Dan.

It reminds of a dark journey through some fucked up racecourse. The beat is heavy enough that breaks on 2 mins or so but its the race sound that I like that brings the tune together.

Epic track.

More Pig & Dan to come.

TT goes premium on FF, again.

I noticed we regressed back to basic on our Filefactory account; TT homepage wasn't streaming tunes directly, slower d-loads, popup ads, etc. Not very cool. So I decided to purchase us 180 days worth of premium for 22squids.
To celebrate this, again, I'm posting one of my favourites of '09. Those of yous at exit last year will remember Justin Martin and Heidi dropping this beautiful bomb with a vocal not to forget. It was only by pure chance that I managed to come across the tune a month or so after that unforgettable night.

A Taste of Yesterday Morning's Extravaganza

Most of you guys were there, but this set from Exit 2010 contains some of the kind of wonderous music our favourite club DJ was spinning yesterday at Fabric.

As an aside, in Room 1 yesterday they opened up these shutters on top of either side of the stage, bathing the room temporarily in sunlight as Ricardo started doing his thing. Panorama Bar style.

It completely knocked us sideways, I was certain that place was completely underground. I heard the light was coming in from a disused section of Farringdon tube station.

Here's an hour.

Some of you guys were keen to get a half hour mix comprising only of the music of Kollektiv Turmstrasse. It wouldn't have been appropriate to cram these tunes together, so I let them all breathe a little more than a half hour would allow. Here's the mix, with track list, and a short biography.

Melodrama – Kollektiv Turmstrasse

"Kollektiv Turmstrasse is a project initiated by the musicians Nico Plagemann and Christian Hilscher from Luebeck, Germany.

Both of them are linking not only their deep ambitions to electronic music with this project - they also link their passion for performing together. By the time the duo developed it´s pretty own stylistic presence in music, which makes their different inspirations and their sharing passion for electronic music absolutely audible. Nico Plagemann was born 1979 in Wismar, a little town at the baltic sea, and found his way to electronic music at the age of 14 - within the early tracker and demo scene. Fascinated by the possibilities of programming his own tracks, he became a tracker on his own, programming mods with Scream- and Fasttracker. This hobby developed and improved rapidly, and after buying the first electronic hardware instruments, it transformed into a passion.

Christian Hilscher was born 1979 in a little coast town named Boltenhagen, in the eastern part of Germany. Already in early years he developed an interest in music and created his first musical pieces with, at those days, popular Tracker tools. After his first open air- and underground parties christian figured out that there would be no way back for him. With his first MKII he started to work on his DJ talent and spent a lot of time making music and working active in culture. He organized his own events which became insider tipps in the regional electronic music scene pretty fast.

Christian and Nico got to know each other on a live gig. Contacts were changed, and through sharing their same interest in music, a deep friendship developed. In the following years both of them were spending all their money in their musical equipment, so it was no surprise that musical projects followed soon. Their first tracks were inspired by early Detroit-Techno and Acid House, which changed into dubby groove techno like releases by Raummusik, Mosaik and Basic Channel. But it wasnt just music what was motivating both of them. All their friends were acting in the electronic music scene and everybody was putting own ideas into it. Kollektiv Turmstrasse turned into the main activity and resulted with their first release in 2001 on electronic parliament."
